Artist statement: Bold Strokes For Art is composed of three artists, Laura McCall, Karen Sleigh and Carol Weiss. Breaking with the age-old tradition of art by an individual artist, they have created a collaborative art that divides the composition into three parts or more—where each artist paints her own portion separately within their own studios. When finished, the panels are reconnected into a unique work of art of strong colors and skewed perspectives. In this way—the individual variations of the artist’s style can be seen up close, but from a step back, it visually blends so that a single work of art evolves. Think of it as joint venture art. The structure of their environment develops trust, creativity and the ability to communicate with each other throughout the entire process; while maintaining an individual perspective in an unconventional way. The three representative artists like to produce the synergy of a group into art for the viewing eye.
About the work:
Title: Reflections Spilling Over

Art form: 2-D

Medium: oil

Year created: 2009

Description of work: This is collaborative art explaining life divided by three. Separate panels are painted by each one of the three artists in their own studio and then rejoined to create one painting of reflections of glass bottles and organic items on a metal surface with spilled water in front of a window. The intent is to show the differences between the surface and reflections, almost to abstraction, even though some items are recognizable. The painting plays with opposites of all the ingredients to circle back and show three artists connecting to one painting.
Oil on three separate 2” cradled panels with a total measurement of 55” by 42”. One large vertical panel measuring 22” by 42” and the two horizontal panels each measuring 33” by 21”. The panels used are special seamless panels with a durable coating made by ArtFX.

Work statement: The piece is a still life reflecting light on objects and different surfaces. It explores the opposites of light and dark, rigid and fragile and fluid and static. The complexity of the piece draws the viewer in to it to discover what it represents and what fits together. Looking closer small imperfections of details appear and not everything is what it seems; much like in life itself. The eye moves through the lines, reflections and mirrored surfaces to find clarity and subjects that are familiar. The collaboration is deception of not one, but three artists painting one painting. That puzzle accompanies all the art and the intriguing story shows life divided by three.
