Artist bio: Megan Heeres hails from Battle Creek, Michigan where she was raised by a city girl (a Detroit native) and a country boy (a Charlevoix local). She attended the Residential College at the University of Michigan and graduated with a BA in "Health Studies and the Arts". She relocated to Portland, Oregon where she studied at the Oregon College of Art and Craft, maintained a studio at the Troy Laundry Lofts, and exhibited her work in many local venues. Megan recently returned to Michigan to study in the Fiber Department at Cranbrook Academy of Art. She received her MFA this May and is looking forward to establishing a studio in Detroit, teaching art, and strengthening connections with the local art community there.
Artist statement: “(Artists) fix something–life–which cannot be fixed…For a work of visual art is stationary, it doesn’t grow or move, or if it does, it inevitably changes into something unintended.” (Fairfield Porter, 1960)
As an artist, I seek to make something unintended–something that grows and moves and reacts to the space that it inhabits. I challenge the distinctions we have made between the natural world and the built world by creating scenarios where these two worlds fuse, questioning static definitions and rigid categories of architecture and biology. I like to imagine how a growing fungus could hold up a crumbling house wall or how a tree’s roots could potentially shore up a foundation. As the viewer interacts with my work, I want s/he to put aside preconceptions about what belongs where and how things function separately in the world.
About the work:
Title: Things That Go (Forth and Back)

Art form: 3-D, Internet / Interactive

Medium: Installation with Kinetic Sculpture and Drawings

Year created: 2009

Description of work: "Things That Go" will employ interactive kinetic sculptures, assemblage, and drawings installed to create a site specific composition directly on the wall. The audience will be encouraged to control the kinetics through a series of switches and toggles that alter their speed, movement, and direction. Through this close contact with the wall, viewers will then be able to explore the nuances of the drawings/collages that tell the story of the kinetic pieces. The drawings themselves are created by sandwiching found materials, thread, and watercolor in between two layers of paper during the process of hand papermaking. During installation, I will draw directly on the wall with both pencil and string to make physical connections between all the parts to create a fluid, narrative composition.

Work statement: The first image on my profile is a sketch of the proposed installation. To see a larger image, please go to my website www.meganheeres.com. The remaining images are of previous works.
"Things That Go" is meant to encourage participation with my sculptural work in a straight-forward, hands-on manner. The audience will literally make things go by pulling cords and turning switches that set the pieces in motion. This piece will also allow me to exhibit my 2D work, the precursor and thought process behind the sculptures, along with said 3D work. I want to explore the conversations they'll with each other, with the site and with the audience. "Things That Go" will be a piece about connections and intersections; the intersection of the natural with the human-made, connections between modes of making, the intersection of the piece and its site, the tangible connections of viewers to the work, and finally the overarching intersection of the parts of the installation into a cohesive whole.
