Artist bio: Deborah Adams Doering received her MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She creates large-scale earthworks, such as "Code for the Grand River, Grand Rapids_09" scheduled to be installed in Ah-Nab-Awen Park for ArtPrize (see proposal photo at right), and also paintings and prints (see www.deborahdoering.com)

Doering’s work has been honored by Sotheby’s International Young Art Competition and juried in the 2004 and 2005 Exhibitions of American Art, RIC, by James Rondeau, Curator of Contemporary Art, Art Institute of Chicago.

Her work has been published in 2009 "Poetic Dialog Project," 2006 "Sourcebook of Art and Architecture," and Print’s "Best of the Best;" her honors include Nippon Steel (Japan) Presidential Award; two Chicago Artists Assistance Program (CAAP) grants; two Ragdale Artist’s Residencies. Her work is part of the Ragdale Foundation’s art collection as well as other public and private collections. She exhibits her work in both the US and abroad.

Artist statement: I use a “core language of form,” which I call “Code,” as an anchor for my artwork.

“Code” consists of horizontal and vertical lines (ones), circles (zeros), and the tilde (a swash mark). It can be seen as a two-dimensional system of mark-making that also represents the three-dimensional movement of a circle in space.

My core language of form offers viewers an opportunity to find relationships between nature and technology, art and science, and many other ideas that are often seen as dualities.

The idea of “code” as art is very new. Lawyers for the Creative Arts in Chicago recently selected my application to write and submit a US Utility Patent for this system of mark-making. My idea is simple, but it has many applications.

I received a CAAP grant to produce a 7-minute DVD summary related to visual art and “Code.” The DVD (go to http://web.me.com/ckdahlgren/Site/Form,_Concept,_Context.html)
shows how my work relates to both art history and our present context.
