Artist bio: For as long as I can remember, the need to create has been a major force in my life. I have always been drawn to the traditional crafts with their appeals of getting down and dirty with the materials. In plain, I am a tactile person who cant help but touch and feel everything around me just so I can file away the memories. In my time at the College for Creative Studies, I found my place among the looms of the Fibers Department. The intricate play between the mechanical workings of the traditional machines and the intertwining responses of the delicate threads to my every action was enchanting. Weaving is the means by which I express my ideas and emotions, cloth and tapestry being the result that carries their intentions out in to our tactile world.
Artist statement: Memories are the fundamental building blocks that determine who we are. They shape us, for they are the constant reminders of events that have impacted us. The memories that we hold dearest seem to be the oldest. Even when over time they have become shrunken and fragmented to the point of only being an image that envelops a feeling. I capture these brief glimpses into my own past through my tapestries. Since tapestry is a lengthy process it allows ample time to meditate on the memory that is being worked out. With every thread woven into place, I contemplate the event and come to terms with its consequences. My tapestries pay homage to who I am, where I came from, and those who helped me get here.
About the work:
Title: Grandpa's Fig Tree

Art form: 2-D

Medium: Tapestry

Year created: 2008

Description of work: This tapestry is a depiction of the leaves and fruit of a fig tree from the viewpoint of looking out from the branches. It was woven on a traditional floor loom and is made up of a wide variety of fibers.

Work statement: In making this piece, I wanted to depict a memory from my childhood. I can remember being with my grandfather in his garden and being in awe of his giant fig tree. I loved to climb up inside it and look out over the yard. When I think about it now, all I can see is the leaves and the figs so high above me and I feel an overwhelming sense of calm and security
