Lewis Tardy
Artist bio: Kalamazoo Michigan has been Lewis Tardy’s home since 1965. After graduating high school, Tardy began studying graphic arts and photography. He stumbled upon his calling while working as an assistant in a sculpture studio. For the past 2 decades he has been creating and showing his work across the country. His works reside in numerous private and corporate collections around the world.
Artist statement: The biomechanical styles my sculptures have evolved throughout a lifetime of experiences, creating life and motion out of static scrap metals.
My fascination with things mechanical, combined with the love of illustrating the human form are most significant to the evolution of my art today.
The union of these found steel parts coupled with a mixture of commentaries including sexuality, levity, motion, strength and attitude result in this unique expression of my vision. Significant inspiration comes from shapes and designs discovered within the found parts and materials, which takes shape in human and animal subjects alike. On many occasions, a single shape or part will inspire and become the building block of a whole Idea.

Description of work: The concept: A life size, or larger, head that is morphed as a photographic camera. The sculpture will incorporate many old camera parts as well as new technology, i.e. computer components, hard drives, circuit boards etc…See examples of past work. Sculpture will be supported by a 35”- 45” in height constructed pedestal.

Work statement: While embracing the new technologies of the digital age, I lament the passing of the old.
