Erin Durfey
Artist bio: Erin Durfey is a graduate of the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana, with a Bachelor of Fine Art in Painting. She has studied in France (2003), Italy (2008), and Benin, Africa(2007). In the spring of 2009, she had her first solo exhibition at The Heartland Gallery in Urbana, IL. She is now working in her home town, Downers Grove, IL making new work and displaying current and past pieces.
Artist statement: I deal with landscapes, natural and unnatural, realistic and abstract. I attempt to capture the beauty of landscape through brushstroke and color. I am interested in notions of the sublime and areas of untouched land in such a populated space. The age and history of the rest of the world inspires me to see it and learn about everything I am not accustomed to. While the young and inexperienced history of the United States and everything I know as true and normal distracts me. I have an overwhelming urge to see the rest of the world. Through seeing other lifestyles and different approaches to the worlds relationships and problems is how I want to shape who I am and how I interact within the world. Particularly through an artists eyes, I am fascinated with artists around the world and how they view the space and relationships around them. I want to display my thoughts about the world and what I have experienced and hopefully continue to experience life.

Description of work: "Visions of the Unknown" (the top painting) was created in collaboration with another artist, Christine Don. Both artists worked on the canvas together and separate. It was an experiment of combining artistic styles and visions onto one canvas. Influences came from the sublime and Dutch landscape painting. This painting is 6' x 8'.
