Arthur Mednick
Artist bio: Mr. Mednick studied anthropology, archeology, sociology and painting at various Universities before striking his first electric arc at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. Since that time he has pushed the technical, material and conceptual limits of steel. Arthur has had solo exhibitions in New York, Berlin,and Philadelphia. Mednick’s work has been included in group exhibitions including Art and the Mathematical Instinct at the Tweed Museum, and Welded! Sculpture of the Twentieth Century at the Neuberger Museum, he was also an artist in residence at P.S.1 the Institute for Art and Urban Resources. His collectors include the playwright Edward Albee of NY, PayPal cofounder Elon Musk of CA., Babette Worth of Berlin, Germany, Annie Sandler of VA, Jeffrey Devers of NJ, Marian Grifiths of NY, the states of Kansas and Hawaii as well as other prominent collections from New York to Hawaii. Mr. Mednick has been reviewed in Art in America,the NY Sun, and more.
Artist statement: My work is fundamentally about the experience of the object. The work explores how we identify objects and identify with objects.The works are not abstract, but definitive objects of an indeterminate nature.The work confronts accepted notions of what steel sculpture should look like and how it should be made. Surfaces are activated using qualities inherent in the material.

Description of work: In his most recent series, Mednick has created steel sculptures of suggestive shapes and forms. The size of these pieces average at about 15" x 10" x 3". A series of 12 will be included in his installation

Work statement: My work is fundamentally about the experience of the object

Born of the figure, though not explicitly figurative, my work renders the body of the viewer as the figure in question. These sculptures explore how the body identifies objects and identifies with objects. The works are not abstract, but definitive objects of an indeterminate nature.

The work confronts accepted notions of what steel sculpture should look like and how it should be made. These works use mass and gravity without relying on size or weight. Surfaces are activated using qualities inherent in the material
