Artist bio: I'm a pretty well-blended mix of designer and illustrator. I always love letting the creatures and characters in my head loose onto paper and canvas. But I also love putting together an eye-catching, clean design. The great thing is, my current job offers me the opportunity to do both. I'm a Senior Designer at the Grand Rapids web company, Fusionary. So, during the day I get to design, and at night I have the time to illustrate, and sometimes vice versa! It's a great balance. Having a passion for both design and illustration helps me be better at the other.

About the work:
Title: It All Started With Comic Books

Art form: 2-D

Medium: Digital

Year created: 2009

Description of work: A visually wild scene of characters, letters and colors, depicting the various aspects/skills of design and illustration that I began to learn and understand through my childhood years of reading comic books.

The First three Covers explained...

Formation Organization (Composition):
Formation and Organization being two key parts of composition. Negative Space, area around positive elements. "Golden Ratio," idea of aesthetically pleasing proportions.

Roy G. Biv and the Halftone Brigade (Color):
"Roy G. Biv," acronym for the color spectrum, Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, Violet. Halftone, printing process used to print some comics.

Planar the Infinite (Perspective):
"Planar" refers to a level surface or plane. "Infinite" refers to never-ending space. "Vanishing Horizons," combination of two perspective terms.

Work statement: The Second three Covers explained...

Brawn and the Hourglass (Anatomy):
"Superioris," anatomical term meaning "above." "Brawn," common descriptor when talking about males. Females are sometimes referred to as having an "hourglass" figure.

The Grotesk Kern (Typography)
"Sans serif" means without serifs. Serifs are the little bracketed elements on some letters. "Grotesk" is not spelled wrong. This spelling refers to some typefaces, which, when first used were thought of as ugly, or, in Europe, "grotesk." "Kern," adjust the space between letters of a word. "Ligature," single character made of two or more letters, (the villain named Ligature is a conjoined twin.)

The Light that Cast Darkness (Form):
Using Light and Shadow to depict form in an artwork. The main focus being the oxymoron that is the title, "Light that cast Darkness." Showing various light sources and how they change the depiction of the form with the three head drawings on the bottom left.
