The Simplicity of Silence The day after the blizzard of 2011 I walked the stillness of the wood following a night of howling wind, and creaking, snapping trees. The land once again silent and unusually pure, I was in awe by the sheer impact of the storm. Intrigued by the abstract quality of the fallen trees, their subtle lines and texture it became a feast for the eye. At that moment, I knew I had to draw this setting. I realized it had to be large-larger than anything I had ever drawn. (And in my detailed drawing style, I knew it could take a few years.) As reference I took over 200 photos and brought hundreds of branches into my studio. It’s been quite a journey that no photo could ever produce. The end is in sight and I would love to debut it at ArtPrize 2012. This will be my fourth ArtPrize. I've placed in the top 50 the first two years and top 25 last year. Included are two previous tree drawings and some portrait drawings that will not be shown.
