How does art and spiritual discipline become wedded together? The arts for a long time have been suspect in the Protestant church as it was seen as idolatrous. I have found that it is through art that I begin to hear the word of God speaking as I struggle to visualize and express in drawings and written words what I am hearing in my daily walks in the woods, short scripture reading, and prayers. It is only when I began to put the marker to the page that the images would often come on their own and flow from the meditation I had just read. I wanted to be challenged during the Lenten time and instead of fasting I decided to feast, meaning that I would attempt to draw one picture for each of the 40 readings. I must admit it was to much to do as some of the readings brought about images that were to wrenching to imagine. It felt as if the pictures needed to be tied with words so that there would be no misunderstandings, I returned to the readings and wrote poetry.
