Woolhouse

2013 ArtPrize Entry

A knitted house and knitted furniture made of wool roving. It really needs to be seen--and felt--in person to be believed! My artist statement: Throughout my artistic career, I have explored everyday objects through unconventional materials. My knitted house is no exception. Drawing inspiration from Mongolian yurts and the “tiny house” movement, I have created a cozy, comforting environment comprised of the sight, sound, and touch of wool. By using the wool in a semi-processed state, I am able to highlight the medium’s unique properties while retaining a recognizably knitted appearance. The repetitive nature of knitting has helped me recover from personal trauma and I hope that seeing my knitted house will do the same for others.

Venue & Connection Information

I need a larger space for this installation, including a reasonable amount of vertical space so I can add a roof. My plan is to install a basic room and then expand the "house" outwards (sort of a commentary on consumption and expansion), so it may actually exceed the dimensions listed. Obviously an indoor space would be much preferred to an outdoor space!
