2012 ArtPrize Entry

Labor juxtaposes an everyday work table with a bronze figure of a laborer leveling concrete with a screed. The action is captured in an iconic moment, the angles of the body and the instrument creating a dialogical triangle. The action also engages notions of territoriality, not just labor. The man is asserting a space he is creating, or at least redefining, with his labor. Nothing we do leaves the world untouched, and so all effort is proprietary in its essence. The table links the construction worker to the artist, for it is on such tables that I model and otherwise engage the physical aspects of my work as an artist.
