It could happen to you

2012 ArtPrize Entry

This photograph was inspired by a dream I had where my hair began falling out. My beloved Aunt had recently faced a breast cancer recurrence. She endured radiation, chemo and the side affects, including hair loss. I was struck by the grace and bravery of her story. I have always wondered if I would be able to handle the situation as well. Would I be strong and courageous? So often we hear, " I never thought it would happen to me" from those that receive the news. Many forms of cancer are hereditary and increase the risk for those with family members. In this work, I invite the viewer to look at yourself and your family history and take preventative measures. If only for your loved ones, make that a reason to be the healthiest version of you. This photo is a self portrait visualizing that diagnosis and treatment. The photo is framed in the actual mirror frame featured in the photo. The frame is 28” tall and 16 1/2” wide.
