This work is an installation of objects, materials and two dimensional media that taken together represent a fictional account of Nikolai Vavilov – the 20th century Russian botanist and plant geneticist – visiting the region during one of his many international agronomical expeditions. Vavilov travelled to many centers of diversity, collecting both wild and domesticated specimens of edible crops, to aid in the protection and improvement of sustainable farming methods. He believed that these methods would, in future, prevent the type of famines that had ravaged his country and others. This installation will prioritize visual information, including imagery, materials and objects, over didactic texts in communicating Vavilov’s narrative. The non-linear narrative, supported by the installation and layout, will confront viewers’ preconceived notions of canonized historical timelines, chronological harmony and accepted ethnographic devices.
