Open the Door to Michigan
2012 ArtPrize EntryTrinitas Classical School students want to encourage you to “Open the Door to Michigan” and look about you. As our state motto says, “Si quaeris peninsulam amoenam, circumspice,” If you seek a pleasant peninsula, look about you. We encourage you to look about you in a different way, to look at items that may seem to have little or no value and see that they can be used again in a functional way or even as works of art. This school-wide collaborative piece was also inspired by Mexican Yarn Painting; this technique has the ability to fool the viewer’s eye. Upon walking closer to inspect the artwork, one may be surprised to learn that it is made from t-shirts. To further the use of recycled materials we used a door for our canvas. It is our hope that we will inspire other artists and students to view used objects as art materials. So, open the door to the beautiful possibilities that Michigan has to offer. Notice the beauty everywhere; even in places others may not see it.
