Made in America

“Made in America,” a 10’ x 7’ US map, is a wall mounted set of custom-made wood & cast iron state-shaped skillets. Reflecting the American Dream, MIA re-imagines the practicality of iron cookware to extol the honor, pride & freedom of homegrown enterprise & personal pioneering. Each pan, a discrete & accomplished ode to stately heritage, joins its neighbors to form a unique echo of the US, one distinctly industrial yet primal via the community & fellowship of cooking. Indeed, the pans-as-country further scrutinizes American values of caste, & aspiration from distinctly "do-it-yourself" perspectives. Praise of a DIY nation evokes the country's fundamental spirit, a certain manifest destiny repeatedly defining our culture & way of life as America establishes a new interdependence. MIA's individual skillet handles sprawl beyond state borders & activate multiple contours off the wall, suggesting that certain independent prosperity is damning for its gluttony & consumption.
