The love of experimentation with a wide range of materials and surfaces has always been a key component in my work. In school, I was drawn to anything that provided a textural experience... plaster, ceramics, charcoal, bronze, steel, wood, and fiberglass. Post college, I started my own business providing the design and application of Italian lime plaster finishes and hand-painted murals for residential and commercial projects. Throughout the 8 years of running my business, I continued to sketch out and envision my own creations which have now become my focus and have at last made it out of my sketch books. My current body of work attempts to balance the layering, timing, and patience of my past material experiences with my underlying desire to work fast and organically. In short, each piece is developed both with and without a plan. The plaster and fabric base is created with a fast, intuitively uncontrolled process, while the surface work is carefully composed in reaction to the base, revealing all the subtle substructures and complicated textual patterns. My interest is in highlighting the patterns that seem to emerge as well as perceived imperfections. I draw inspiration from the complex designs of a landscape that can only be viewed aerially and attempt to capture that design as well as it’s subtle movement.
