Melancholy is a large cast aluminum piece that has stainless steel tubing, led lights and cast resin light covers in a bulb form. The main body of the piece has a variety of surface treatments. There are both highly polished areas and dramatically textured areas that are treated in a wash of color. Much like the rest of the work I create there is a personal story/meaning behind it. This work is the physical incarnation of my own struggle with melancholy/depression. The hypnotic blue lights and the shining outer surfaces of the main body of the work act as a lure of sorts that draws you in. And as many of us that struggle with conditions like melancholy/depression we know that is often how it starts. We will dwell on things that seem innocent and harmless at first, then before you know it your caught in the tentacles of a strangely appealing monster that can be hard to escape.

Venue & Connection Information

The venue for this work must have at least an 11 foot tall ceiling. Its preferable that it be 12 foot or more. There also should be adequate open space around the piece and proper lighting is a must. This work needs to have two spotlights on the main body of the piece and preferably no other light within a 15 foot radius. If I install it in a venue that has large windows it would be best far away from them, unless it is light and viewed after dark. It will need an electrical outlet. I only require one plug. It would be nice if it is on the floor so that the pedestal could sit over it, but a wall jack will suffice. The tubing that comes out of the main body is stable once installed, but viewers should be kept engaging with it. If there is no space large enough the tubing can be adjusted to an extent to accommodate a smaller space. It takes about and hour in a half to set up this piece.
