Calder Plaza
Venue description
Calder Plaza is a large, concrete pedestrian plaza in the heart of downtown Grand Rapids. Alexander Calder's stabile La Grande Vitesse stands at the north end. The massive warm-red sculpture was the first financially funded project by the National Endowment for the Arts in 1969. Since that time, it has become the focus of the annual Festival for the Arts every June, known to locals simply as "festival." Its distinct form has also been integrated into the logo of the City of Grand Rapids, as well as the ArtPrize logo. To the South of La Grand Vitesse the plaza is large, flat, and clear of obstructions. During events, tents, stages, or other structures are typically erected here. For ArtPrize, the space is available to use as the artist sees fit, barring certain structural limitations. This space will be curated by Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park.
Venue statement
Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park is pleased to be curating this site for the City of Grand Rapdis. This large urban plaza is a certerpiece for Grand Rapids. It is mainly concrete and surrounded by modernist structures. The simplicity of the space and understated character of the buildings make this a highly flexible site for installation and exhibition. Access for set-up is available from Ottawa Avenue. Some weight restrictions do apply due to the subterranean parking structure. All artists' proposals and requests will be decided by June 10.
