About the work
Title: The Space Between Us

Art form: 2-D

Medium: Colored Pencil on Mylar over Digital Inkjet Prints

Year created: 2010

Description of work: This body of work includes 5 mixed media drawings (each app. 28" x 32") in which an image is drawn on translucent mylar and then layered over a digital inkjet print that has been digitally manipulated.

This series explores The Space Between Us. This is achieved through the juxtaposition of images of children whose lives and experiences are radically different based on seemingly random variables such as geographic location, socio-economic status, political environment, cultural norms, family structure, and more.

Speaking both locally and globally, there is tremendous disparity in the life experiences of children. What better measure of the compassion of a culture than its attention to and concern for its most vulnerable citizens? By using selective color and the veiling properties of mylar, the experiences of abundance and deprivation are represented simultaneously with each influencing our reading of the other. Somewhere in the space between us, when one suffers, we all suffer.
