Description of work: A large part of our current visual stimulation comes in the form of pixels and dots per inch. Quality has been more and more defined by just how many dots you can squeeze into that inch. This body of work takes on the challenge of changing the way you look at pixels. It is a literal, actual pixelation of a painting. The ink and gouache painting, done on hot press illustration board, once created was then cut into many smaller pieces, just like a digital camera does to a photograph. After which, it was reassembled in a way that allows the viewer to still see the small squares that create the image. When looking directly at the painting, it seems whole, but upon closer inspection the viewer notices that the whole painting has cast shadows from the many different pieces popping out and receding, accentuating the individuality of each piece. Here you will see "192 Irises", one part of a series I am in the process of creating for the Artprize show. |
