Passage Through

My work is about a sense of place and the passing of time. This cold wax and oil painting is an abstraction of a familiar landscape that I have sailed, boated and driven past many times. In my paintings I am using the process of revealing and concealing surface elements to represent places as we move through them. Whether driving by in a car or experiencing the environment in other forms of transportation we view our world in momentary glimpses. Those places become overlapped, flattened and transformed in our thoughts. The passage of time also plays a part in the transient quality of the places we pass through. Looking around we see remnants of signs, skeletons of buildings, shadows of windows and doors long gone. These are reminders to any one looking of memories found on the surface of the landscape, sometimes barely visible, but there nonetheless, as reminders of the past.
