Theme: “A Child’s Garden” is a self-standing 3D piece made in cooperation with the students of Pine Ridge Elementary in Forest Hills. The theme is an exploration of the garden as a symbol of growth, life, and nurture. What grows in your garden? Who helps it grow? What fruit do you want it to bear? The tiles: Each child has painted a 4.25” by 4.25” tile with underglazes, creating a flower image. The tiles have been glazed and fired, yielding brilliant colors. The artists: every student, from Kindergarten to 4th grade, has participated. The piece: The tiles will be assembled in a vertical display. With 500 tiles, the display will measure approximately 20’ long by 5’ high, in two conjoining 10’ units. The entire effect should be quite stunning. An indoor piece, “A Child’s Garden” will be self supporting. Being done in cooperation with a Forest Hills school will ensure a good amount of traffic. As of this writing, the tiles are all finished, but the display has not yet been constructed.
