Upcycled

Yale High School Vote Code: 67759

With environmental concerns being a hot topic in the world currently, my students wanted to focus on a way to promote conservation and recycling in a way that also would be useful and helpful to less fortunate community members. We are recycling plastic bags in order to create sleeping mats for the homeless. The bags are first cut into strip, then turned into plarn (plastic yarn). Students then use the yarn to crochet sleeping mats. Our sculpture will consist of a photo journal of our upcycling journey and an example of one of the many sleeping mats that will be created for the homeless over the course of the next 3-4 months. Our hope is that this activity will continue well after ArtPrize has concluded and become a tradition of giving back to those who need a little extra compassion.
