The Wheel of Death

Wheel of Death is a drawing focused on contemporary education and the struggles of students in America. Knife throwing, and its use of the wheel, is an act with history grounded in magic and sideshows. It is a game of trust. The magician throws knives at his assistant missing her yet coming dangerously close to her body. She has given herself over to the knife thrower, trusting him not to hurt her. The beauty of the assistant is a misdirection. The viewer becomes unaware of the danger until the knife is imbedded in the wheel. I am using the act of knife throwing as a format to illustrate the peril America has put on its students. Student debt, like knives, are hurled at the the wheel landing dangerously close to the female figure in the center. The figure represents education and is crucified on the wheel. This is meant to show how American students are punished for seeking edification. The staggering debt that faces students today confirms that America can no longer be trusted to take care of it’s student population. Patricia Constantine
