Horizon is a floating ring—a circular boundary formed by 200 display portals that extend the line of sight into another world. It’s a 3-D digital space inspired by the Grand Rapids skyline, filled with its buildings, monuments, art, and gardens, framed by the Grand River and the Michigan sky. Through Horizon, the physical and digital worlds are merged. The ring’s interior and exterior share the same geographic north. The moon and sun are aligned, moving in sync as colors, forms and shapes of Grand Rapids’ digital and physical worlds change together. Visitors participate in this change as co-creators. By manipulating the portals, they explore inside the horizon, flipping the physical boundaries into their digital extension, creating new patterns, unveiling its details, colors, forms and shapes. The virtual space becomes three-dimensional as the room gets filled with shifting lights and colors. Special thanks to Gentex Corporation and Cadillac for their support and providing the portals, their Rear Camera Mirrors.

Phantasma is a collective of artists utilizing technology as material. Like a painter may use oil paint, we use sensors, effectors, and computers as means for artistic expression. Technology has created a fracture between our physical and digital worlds. Through our art, we create physical-digital installations that merge the best of both worlds.
