Asking For It II

The phrase “asking for it” means that a woman somehow invites violence against herself, whether through her actions, clothing, use of alcohol, or even attractiveness. It means that women are expected to prove their own innocence in court when they are the victims, not the perpetrators, of violence. It means that they are blamed when another person assaults them. We females are so accustomed to being physical vulnerable that we hardly notice it anymore. We do our best to avoid dangerous men at the expense of our own freedom. We are captives confined to daylight and safe neighborhoods. In my painting, I used a flower to depict female vulnerability. The feather represents flattering clothing or other adornment. Sexual assault is often blamed on a woman's appearance. I used dewdrops, a symbol of purity, to indicate that a woman's sexuality is sacred and is hers to give away to whom she chooses. She never asks for it to be taken by force. Perpetrators are responsible for their own actions.
