Have You Ever Noticed?

Have you even looked into the eyes of a homeless person? Have they ever looked back? My series of drawings are meant to give the opportunity to both the subject and the viewer to be seen and to see. I want the viewer to be bombarded with the faces of those they may have avoided. I want the expressions to draw in the curiosity of the passers-by. I want the viewer to be able to drop any anxiety concerning the question of monetary charity and for once: just see. In order to complete my series, I went around my hometown of South Bend, Indiana to find those who stood on the streets with signs asking for help. Some were homeless, others just needing extra help, and some just asking for prayers. I offered each person money in exchange for posing for a photographic portrait. I gave them no direction in regards to posing, but each one looked straight into the lens. Some were unsure of how to feel about being drawn, some cried because they were so moved.
