Ode to Joy

For this exhibition, I chose two photos from a series I captured chronicling the last years of my mother’s life. These photos – one in aged color and the other in black and white – symbolize the fading of her once vibrant spirit. The title, “Ode to Joy” underscores her wish to be someone else. She often expressed this desire in both poetry and a preference for others to refer to her as Joy, her middle name. My mother struggled both physically and psychologically following my father’s passing in the early 1970s. Over the next four decades, she spent most of her days at the beach, silently searching the sky, reminiscing. The only peace she would ever find was in the memories she saw come to life against the white canvas of the sun.
