Thirty Five

Thirty Five consists of layers of paint built up over time. Extra house paint and reclaimed art supplies are used freely to play with color, movement, and shape. If anything, this work celebrates trying new and novel things. In a 1952 review titled "The American Action Painter" Harold Rosenberg wrote about similar paintings, "At a certain moment, the canvas began to appear to one American painter after another as an arena in which to act - rather than as a space in which to reproduce, re-design, analyze, express an object, actual or imagined. What was to go on the canvas was not a picture but an event." In an age of distraction and productivity, it is good for me to participate in fully immersive events with their own inherent value.
