The Seeking is Better than the Finding

My painting practice is rooted in ideas of fantasy, longing, and the construction of identity. This pair of paintings was originally created and displayed in collaboration with the Art Gallery of South Australia, and used a rare Australian coin worth $1,000,000 as a jumping off point to explore wealth, childhood fantasies, and the transformative power of treasure hunt. One painting is a land unmoored from time and reality, created from family artefacts, whilst the other is an anamorphic image of the coin in question, referencing op-art and magic eye illusions. Anamorphic art is distorted so that the true image is only revealed when the viewer is in a specific location. In this way the painting is a treasure hunt itself - the true coin only existing in each viewers eye for a moment. For Art Prize I would like to create a third painting, also featuring anamorphic techniques and constructed spaces, which will expand these themes and create a more complex hunt for the viewer.
