Standing at over 15 feet tall, "The Door is Always Open" is a suspended life size bird cage crafted from copper, wood and resin that holds a human figure facing away from an open door. "The Door is Always Open" is intended to evoke conversation and self-reflection about the cages we create for ourselves, or the limitations that illnesses impose on us, despite the open door and ability to see the potential for freedom, recovery, light and love. The human figure is a symbol of feeling trapped within one’s struggle with depression, anxiety, addiction, or unhealthy relationships. The cage's open door represents the ability to let yourself out, or let someone in as an opportunity for recovery, hope and change. After creating Butterfly Awards and attending events for local mental health non-profit, i understand, Dan was deeply moved by the idea of the "open door" as he has friends and family who have struggled with mental illness. Creating this sculpture has been a cathartic experience.
