Weaving a Community Together

Art & Soul Detroit Vote Code: 66131

This year's entries from Art & Soul, a non-profit art program in the city of Detroit for the homeless and those adults in need, are collaborative weavings using frames donated from a church in transition. Transition is a key word as our participating artists are moving through the challenging phases of their lives. Materials used run the gamut from grasses to ribbons, jewelry to fur, fabrics to paper and beads just to name a few. The innovative work provides a different way of creating art from "found" materials and encourages the artists to move beyond the usual purpose of items. It also encourages them to contribute what they can to the common goal.
