A SELECTION OF WOODTURNINGS

A Selection of Woodturnings presents two objects turned from wood obtained at the junction of a branch (crotch) of a tree. The Wave Bowl is made of red oak, which was freshly cut and wet at the time of turning. As it dried, the differential shrinkage across the grain caused it to warp and twist, creating an organic shape. The natural edge or bark was left on. The main trunk and two branches are evident from the darker colored heartwood. The Two Halves Are Better Than One is made of maple and includes a significant crack from a crotch. The wood in this area of a tree can have spectacular grain and be surprisingly strong, which allowed this bowl to be turned.
