The Language Is Asleep

People aren’t communicating well with each other right now because the language is exhausted. It needs to sleep—and to dream. In the performance installation, “The Language Is Asleep,” Chris Vitiello turns the Grand Rapids Art Museum’s Hunting Gallery and Annex into a surreal, interactive environment for our exhausted language to replenish in. Vitiello will embody the sleeping language for the duration of ArtPrize, writing constantly and handing one-line poems to visitors coming through the space. He’ll occasionally wake language up and transform into the Poetry Fox, a giant fox who bangs out custom, on-demand poems on his vintage typewriter for visitors. Every visitor will leave the gallery with a poem in their hand, a more-awake communicator. "The Language Is Asleep" is the Pitch Night Durham winner.
