In 1943 Abraham Maslow wrote a well-established theory of human needs. 74 years later, we still await the deconstruction and resuscitation of our education system as our students either thrive or collapse due to the lack of fundamental essentials. This piece is meant to be visually dissected; the left side portrays those who have the needed resources and are moving up the hierarchy. The right side depicts a struggling population. The right side was designed with more gates and hurdles; it is a simple truth that if we are to structure our educational system with enlightenment as the ultimate goal for students & society then we have to acknowledge, their psychological and physical needs. Both sides of this assemblage contain keys and doorways because it is possible to move to higher levels of self-actualization without lower levels being met, but it is much less likely. Maslow died in 1970; he and over 50 million students in the United States silently await today’s educational autopsy.
