This is a native American story. A forest catches fire, all the birds and the animals flee their forest homes and go to the river. They are panicked and afraid and they feel totally helpless. The hummingbirds also afraid, but she does not feel helpless. Over and over again, she fills her tiny beak with water from the river, and tries to put out the raging fire. the other animals and birds make fun of her and call her a fool."you can't possibly save the forest, one drop at a time." "There is nothing we can do." "The fire is too big." "You are crazy." But the hummingbird refuses to stop. Back and forth she flies, carrying drops of water to put out the fire. And, in the face of the other animals' fear and ridicule, her response is: " I am doing my part". The world is depending on those of us who are welling to be fools like the hummingbird!
