River's Edge

When Olive trees no longer produce olives, the wood, prized for its natural beauty, is often used by carvers and other wood workers. The tree producing this 30 inch diameter piece was a large and old tree. When I saw this piece of wood at our local Forest Products store, the flow of the grain as it curves around the islands, formed by defects of old branches, brought "River" immediately to mind. I divided the piece into three smaller pieces and used various wood dyes for the color. Being from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, I love rivers. They have a certain tranquility that can not be found in other places. With this piece, I can almost hear the water.
