Future's Past

Future's Past is a painting that pays homage to a bygone era of great neon signage. Using local Grand Rapids area references, I'm especially fond of the atomic age signage of the 50's/60's and am referencing locations that have since been torn down as well as those still in existence. The comet bowling and cocktails sign is a perfect example of a time when the space age references seemed to point us toward the heavens.. The figure in the piece is both contemplative and optimistic. The painting (5' x 6' oil on canvas) has a stop motion video that complements the piece. I liked bringing the video to life to actualize concepts like rebirth, renewal, so-called progress and also the nostalgia for the past.
