'Virtue-Virtu-Vertu' was the first series in an ongoing project featuring tower-like structures. It was made using graphite, silver ink, metal tape and gold and silver leaf on heavy Italian paper. We have always striven to present the feminine – specifically, to subvert the traditional male gaze. In more recent years, our methods have naturally evolved into the less figurative; in the format of these pieces (the tower is usually associated with masculinity), the title and the details, this piece continues that aim. To us, the towers are both humanesque chakra portraits – portraits of ‘Everywoman’ - and explorations of landscape. Viewers, on the other hand, have seen them in a variety of ways: as trees, as Maypoles or totem poles, as phone masts or representations of technology. 'Virtue-Virtu-Vertu' was shown as part of the recent 'Escape Routes' show at John Michael Kohler Arts Center. Our current series of thirteen is destined for a solo show at The Drawing Center in 2018.
