"Coltrane Quartet" is a 42" x 36" oil on canvas painting that was inspired by John Coltrane's historic album "A Love Supreme". Coltrane's eyes are open, representing the new consciousness that inspired him to create the album. John Coltrane, Elvin Jones, McCoy Tyner, and Jimmy Garrison are juxtaposed and overlapped in a way that creates a circular movement that depicts the vibrations and metaphysical power of music Coltrane wrote about in the liner notes of A Love Supreme. This became the formula for how I characterized other musical figures and the energy that is generated through their creativity. Texture, composition, negative space, and color are used to visually represent each musician's creative process as they are in the moment of creation. "A Love Supreme" is one of several pieces that make up "The Music Makers" series that can be found at www.robertelchertgallery.com.
