Carousel

Curiosity about thoughts and feelings of childhood wonder led me to create Carousel. A visit last year to the glorious Silver Beach Carousel at St. Joe, MI, reminded me of being young and filled with joy. How much of our childhood innocence can we access? Sometimes we remember clearly but often a brief glimpse is all that is within reach. Carousel, 54”w x 54”h x 10”d, is made of glass panels using the technique of pate de verre. Finely crushed glass, or frit, is pressed into prepared molds and fired in a kiln until the frit just melts. I created patterned molds from such diverse materials as clay, found metal and plastic, and buttercream icing. This wall sculpture celebrates color and is composed of highly textured overlapping panels. Each panel hangs individually on hooks projecting from a metal hanger.
