Lucia Clock

Lucia (light) is a clock that uses differing marker sizes and illuminated colored LEDs to present the time. 12 larger markers represent hours, while 11 medium sized markers represent 5 minute increments from 5 to 55, and 4 smaller markers, located within the 2, 5, 8 and 11 hours, represent 4 one minute increments. Lucia allows for a build up of markers as the day goes on, allowing the viewer to experience time differently than on an analog clock, which continues along a circle; a sense of urgency is felt, to maximize and take full advantage of the day, before all markers are illuminated at 12:59, and then all but one turn off at 1. To read time, start at the bottom and count the hours (larger markers) that lead up to the topmost illuminated hour. Next, for the minutes, count the 5s (medium markers) from the bottom up, in increments of fives, to the topmost illuminated 5 minute. Lastly, count the number of illuminated small marker bars, and add this to the 5 minute total.
