Troubled Waters

The protection and preservation of clean water has become an important topic of discussion in recent years. What's alarming is that the issue has reached an unprecedented critical level across this country. With the water crisis in Flint, Michigan, the ongoing fight to protect the sacred lands and clean water in Standing Rock, oil spills in our oceans and the threat of the EPA's Great Lakes Restoration project being de-funded by a significant margin, it is clear that our most precious natural resource is at an extremely high risk of becoming contaminated at disturbing levels. "Troubled Waters" is an allegory depicting those who have been and are being affected by the contamination of water here in the U.S., and it serves as a foreshadowing of things to come if all attempts to stop capitalism and politics from creating further damage to our waters fail. What's even more unnerving is how the media had been slow to covering these issues on a national level. The fight to preserve clean water in Standing Rock didn't reach national attention until months after protests began. The crisis in Flint received little to no coverage until early 2016, nearly two years after the water hit extreme levels of contamination. Journalistic laziness has kept the majority uniformed on the severity of this issue. It's no secret that our environment is at the mercy of politics and capitalist greed. Other nations have made substantial efforts to create new ways to protect the environment, but unfortunately the U.S. drags behind due to political & economic agendas. This piece serves as a warning of the dangers that await us, if nothing is done to keep our waters clean and most importantly, drinkable.
