Joy Buddies

In a time that's wrought with divisiveness and separatism, I felt called to create work that focused on unity for my inaugural year at ArtPrize. While whimsical at first glance, my 120-pound fire-painted sculpture "Joy Buddies" serves as a reflection of the fiery joy we feel when we're surrounded by those who lift us up in this world, right in our local communities. The vibrant colors and patterns of the sashes that adorn their plump bodies are the result of applying over 2,000 controlled and precise strokes of a flame from my soldering torch on copper (no paint). The rings symbolize the connection between our minds and hearts, and the power of community that brings us together. My intention is for Joy Buddies to be a gentle reminder that the future is plump with hope and we are better together
