What is the current state of civil rights in your country? Do you feel protected and supported by the laws enacted by your government? Artist Stacey L. Kirby offers The Bureau of Personal Belonging as a setting for such dialogue about community, civil rights and belonging. Over the past 9 years, 115 performances and over 3000 participants, Kirby has shared a series of “performative interactions” – performances set within site-specific installations that are activated by viewer participation. The Bureau is an installation comprised of three ongoing works, The Declaration Project, VALIDnation and her newest work, I AM. Visitors offer written and verbal response as they interact with Kirby and performers from Grand Rapids. Kirby critically examines governmental process and legislation (North Carolina's HB2 and Michigan's SB993 & HB5717) while imploring us to trust in the validity of our own voices and our power to make an impact on the governing bodies that shape our communities. ***Be part of the dialogue about LGBTQ rights! We are looking for VOLUNTEERS to work in the Bureau during ArtPrize Friday-Saturday (12-8 pm) and Sunday (12-4 pm)! We would LOVE to have you as part of our team!! If you would like to validate your community through interacting with visitors, processing paperwork, and passing out stickers, then sign up for a training on our Facebook page in the EVENTS section. Questions? Reach out to us via email: thebureauofpb@gmail.com---- All volunteers that work for 4 hours+ will receive a LIMITED EDITION RUBBER STAMP from the project.
