Yardage is centered around consumption and labor, in the context of globalization. Much of the clothing that we wear is produced en mass in places where labor is cheap, working conditions are poor, and laborers are not compensated well. The majority of these cheaply made goods become fodder for landfills. People are invited to donate their used clothing to Goodwill of Greater Grand Rapids, the sponsor of the exhibition at KCAD. Clothing that has not been re-used then will be disassembled and the raw material, fabric, will be cut into uniform pieces that will then be sewn into a new bolts of fabric. People are invited to sign up to volunteer (Sign up here! http://goo.gl/rhi8uI ) to process and sew the fabric back together. The new fabric being produced will mark each day's production. The fabric produced will be used by KCAD's Sustainable Fashion class to produce Zero-Waste Designs. The cotton scraps from the project will be composted.
