Heavy Surf

Mary Louise Anderson's avatar Mary Louise Anderson

Artist Living in a remote area along the North Coast of California, among dense redwood forests and hundreds of miles of wind swept coastline, Mary is constantly reminded of the quality of wilderness that surrounds her. Through her work, Mary seeks to express that sense of "wildness" and beauty. This quality symbolizes the very nature of the creative process itself. In both nature and art, structure is everything. It is this apparent contradiction between order and "wildness" that she finds challenging. While jogging on the beach, she became aware of the subtle order among the chaotic "wildness" in the dune grasses that change constantly in the ocean wind. In using coastal grass as a subject, she focuses on the not so obvious structure of form and composition that underlies the quality of "wildness". There is a certain truth to be found in looking beneath the surface
