The Mandelbrot Set

Maureen OKeefe's avatar Maureen OKeefe

I use blind contour drawings as the basis for my recent portrait work. A blind contour drawing is done without looking down at the drawing surface and in one continuous line. This process of abstraction results in distorted but vaguely familiar faces. Much of my work deals with my family members. My ArtPrize entry in particular explores the similarities and differences in five generations of women in my direct lineage. Titled "The Mandelbrot Set" after the numerical set which produces complex and self-similar forms, it depicts my great-grandmother, my grandmother, my mother, myself, and my daughter.
