Broken Doughboy

"Broken Doughboy" - PTSD, or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is just now being recognized as a wound that is no different than any physical injuries inflicted on the battlefield. I deliberately chose a WWI soldier to emphasize that this is not a new phenomenon of warfare but that it is only recently being accepted as a legitimate injury, and is being dealt with as a serious mental and emotional malady. This soldier, only a century ago, would be considered "Shell Shocked", or suffering from "Battle Fatigue", or worse, be considered a coward. There was little if any treatment or tolerance for such symtoms. In truth, this malady has been a direct result of the experience of warfare where one is subjected to an amount of terror, or acts which are beyond the individuals ability to tolerate mentally. We need to more fully understand the long term effects of this condition as it affects not only the family and friends of the combat veteran, but our society at large. The phrase "I support the troops" has a hollow ring if not proceeded by fundamental action.
